The NHS recruits over 5,000 African nurses annually. The NMC requires either OET grade B (350+) or IELTS Academic 7.0 (with 6.5+ in Writing) before registration. Langoli tutors specialize in healthcare English and nursing-specific scenarios β most nurses reach NMC standards in 12-20 weeks of focused preparation.

Both are accepted since 2017. OET is generally more practical for nurses because the content uses real clinical scenarios β patient handover, nurse-doctor communication, discharge letters, drug administration documentation. IELTS Academic is more general (essays on environment, technology, etc.) but cheaper (~$250 vs $350 for OET) and more widely available across Africa. For most African nurses, OET is the more strategic choice β the vocabulary gap is smaller because you already know clinical English.
OET: grade B (350+) in each of the four sub-tests (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall with minimum 6.5 in Writing and 7.0 in Listening, Reading, Speaking. The Writing module is typically the hardest for non-native speakers β that's where most candidates fail their first attempt. Tutors at Langoli give particular attention to the OET letter-writing format (referral letter, discharge summary).
The NMC evaluates each application individually. Degrees from Schools of Nursing recognized by the country's nursing council (Cameroon's IFCS, Nigeria's NMCN, Ghana's NMC, Kenya's NCK) are generally accepted, but you may need to pass the NMC Test of Competence β a CBT (online multiple-choice) followed by an OSCE (practical exam) taken in the UK. The whole process from application to OSCE pass takes 6-12 months.
Yes β many trusts run International Nurse recruitment programs that cover OET fees, NMC application fees, and sometimes preparation courses. Notable programs: Barts Health NHS Trust, Manchester University NHS, Birmingham Women's and Children's, NHS Employers' International Recruitment Scheme. They typically offer a 2-3 year contract in exchange. The interview happens in your country (often in Lagos, Nairobi, or Accra) before you travel.
