Three levels by age and ability: (1) Starters (Pre-A1, ages 6-8): basic English with 200-300 vocabulary words; (2) Movers (A1, ages 8-10): expanded vocabulary 400-600 words, simple grammar; (3) Flyers (A2, ages 9-12): more complex sentences, 800+ words. After Flyers, students progress to KET (Key English Test, B1) for older children. Most international schools test annually and want children to advance one level per year.
Three reasons: (1) university admission for African students later in life often values Cambridge English certifications; (2) the certification structure builds confidence and milestones — children see progress clearly; (3) the Cambridge approach develops balanced skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) rather than only one. Even if your school doesn't require YLE, taking it gives your child a recognized international credential.
Filter tutors by 'Cambridge Young Learners' or 'YLE'. Look for: CELTA/DELTA holders, Cambridge Examiner certifications, experience with international schools (St. Saviour's, British International School, etc.), and confirmed familiarity with the YLE format. The teaching style for kids is fundamentally different from adult teaching — tutors who are great with adults aren't always great with children.
Movers: 12-16 weeks of 2 sessions/week. Flyers: 16-24 weeks of 2-3 sessions/week. The Speaking module is usually the easiest for African international school students; the Writing module is the hardest because the format expects very specific structures (descriptive writing, story completion, etc.) that differ from general English class.
Cambridge English Authorized Centres exist in: Lagos (multiple), Abuja, Accra, Nairobi, Mombasa, Cairo, Casablanca, Tunis, Dakar, Yaoundé, Johannesburg, Cape Town. Sessions held throughout the year. Cost: $40-80 USD per exam depending on location. Booking: 6-8 weeks in advance during peak periods (May-June).
Many parents come to us because their child failed a school English test and lost confidence. Langoli tutors who specialize in YLE prep build confidence first (low-stakes practice, encouragement, building on what the child does know) before introducing exam pressure. We don't drill kids until they're miserable — we make English feel rewarding, then exams become a manageable proof of progress.
